So I was a little bit down and out last week, having succumbed to a rather nasty June flu. Is it just me or are summer colds and flues much more miserable than their winter counterparts?
Anyway, I was laid up for the first few days of last week, and then struggled along as that aching flu morphed into more of a cold, complete with a misplaced voice and a hacking cough.
My best friend became this homemade cough syrup I was introduced to a year or two ago, which totally rocked my world – and especially my colds.
It’s so simple, it’s ridiculous:
2 Tablespoons honey
2 Tablespoons fresh squeezed lemon
1-2 shakes/pinches of cayenne pepper
Stir, and administer a teaspoon at a time, as needed.
Reasons I love it: It clears a coughing spasm immediately, and keeps it gone for hours. You know the ones, where it feels like you’re going to hack up a lung? Yeah. In my experience, cough candies and store bought syrups help, kinda/sorta, to alleviate a coughing spasm for a little bit, but really don’t seem to be much more helpful than water, or regular candy. I don’t know if it’s honey’s naturally antibacterial powers, the citrusy astringent or Vitamin C of the lemon or the hint of a bite from the cayenne, but this stuff works for me.
So I thought I’d let you in on the secret, in case, you know, that crazy summer sickness makes its way your way.
That said, I do hope this finds you well and thriving. As for me, I’m getting there!
