Poo Poo Paper

I thought Mr. Pear Tree was joking when he brought this pad of paper home, declaring it was a poopy gift from a friend. After all, it’s an attractive little block of note paper.

Then I read the back. Made by The Great Elephant Poo Poo Paper Company, the beautifully-finished recycled paper is made from recycled elephant… poop.

Yep.

How’s that for a novelty item?

Apparently, elephants are big grass eaters, and most of it goes right through them without being broken down. So their droppings – which I imagine would be considerable – is full as fibre. And since fibre is a key ingredient in paper, using elephant poo is a viable alternative to using trees.

I don’t know if it will catch on with the masses, but it’s certainly unique as a gift idea.

And don’t worry – it doesn’t smell.

What do you think? Would you use paper recycled from animal doo-doo? I must admit, even though I trust it’s clean – and it’s lovely paper – it feels a little weird to use it…

I’m a huge fan–in S Africa I always bought paper made using dung, where possible. (I seem to remember finding some hippo “poo” paper once!) Great post, L-A. Inspiring. 😉

    EMP,
off to raid my stationery box (but alas, no grassy sheets will I find!)
