Resolutions for a New Year: Pamper Yourself

Years ago, someone predicted that the people of the future, with their dishwashers, microwave ovens, remote controls and computers, would have more leisure time than ever before. And yet all those conveniences seem to have opened up more time for us to work longer hours at higher stress jobs. What free time we do have is often filled with commitments that range from community volunteering to driving kids from team sports to lessons to the mall.

If this is your life – or even if it isn’t – I recommend this week’s resolution for 2011: Pamper yourself.

“People always make resolutions to do more and work harder, and find that they burn out early into the year,” Aura Beauty spa owner Lindsay Goertzen observes. “Getting these resolutions to stick is much easier if you take care of yourself, get pampered, and forget about daily stress. Instead of making a resolution to work harder, why not make one to pamper yourself more? Certainly productivity and overall happiness will improve!”

Lindsay is a former paramedic who started her own spa less than a year ago after a bout of illness caused her to reanalyze her life. You can read more about her story here.

Aura Beauty, which she started with her brother Jeffrey Bunn, is unique because it comes to you. Lindsay’s team of licensed aestheticians have offered their services – everything from facials to foot massages and manicures – in homes, hotel rooms, poolside and in coffee shops.

“This is a core principle we have at Aura Beauty: Life is about living – not about working 80 hours a week with constant stress! It is about living life in balance. We have seen in our own lives how much more productive we become when we take time to relax and recharge our body and minds. We feel that pampering ourselves is mandatory to living a happier life while increasing work productivity,” Lindsay said.

In addition to a little spa pampering now and then, Lindsay said she makes an effort to regularly unwind by enjoying an Epsom salt soak in the tub, or a simple peppermint foot soak. “It’s an easy, relaxing, do-it-yourself at-home pampering experience,” she said. When she wants to indulge a little more, she’ll go for a relaxing facial and deep massage.

Feeling good, mentally and physically – what could be a better way to start the year?

To help one of our readers kick start a year of pampering, Lindsay and Aura Beauty are offering a pampering basket, with SpaBinge Organics Body Scrub and SpaBinge Organics Lotion, both in rare white grapefruit scent, a glass nail file and a $25 gift certificate towards a spa party.

The winner will be announced Monday morning, 17 January.

  1. I totally agree with this article. For years I’ve had this Sunday night ritual: I take a relaxing bath using various scrubs and masks followed with vanilla body lotion. Then I’m in the mood to write in my journal, write letters, and read. All of this gets me in the right frame of mind to great the new week. The journal writing especially helps me to wrap up one week and prepare for the next.

  2. I love this idea. Having a relaxing bath or painting my nails always makes me feel better.
    Maybe tonight I’ll pamper myself!

  3. I agree life gets way to stressful, the weekend is the only time i can relax and yet i am still feel like i am running around like a chicken with its head cut off. On saturdays i have started going for walks to try unwind and spend a little time to my self.

  4. Aura Beauty does an amazing job… had one of my best pedicures EVER from them 🙂 And I love the idea that I don’t have to try to get those crazy little plastic sandals on, walk through the snow to my car and drive home without ruining it! I need to try more…
